Compulsory Attendance

  • Wylie ISD is dedicated to the academic achievement and success for all students. Regular school attendance is a critical part of that success. Absences from class result in the disruption of a student’s learning. Therefore, it is important to make every effort to avoid unnecessary absences. School attendance is a requirement by Texas Compulsory Attendance Laws. Students must attend class 90% of the time it is offered to receive credit for a course. Absences are counted per class period. A list of exemptions per state law or local district policy is provided in the Wylie High School Student Handbook section regarding Attendance. Exemptions require applicable documentation provided to the Attendance Office within three (3) days of the student’s return to school, or the absence may be considered unexcused. All absences, both excused and unexcused, require parents/guardians to provide the Attendance Office with an explanation for the absence. Please note that the district is not required to excuse any absence, even if the parent provides a note explaining the absence, unless the absence is an exemption under compulsory attendance laws.
