Wylie East Elementary is shaping young leaders through its Spike Squad, a new student-led safety group for third graders. These students greet their peers, help manage younger students in the cafeteria and gym, and practice leadership skills by fostering a respectful and structured environment.

Assistant Principal Kim Ferguson emphasized that the program not only teaches responsibility but also helps students develop kindness and communication skills. The application process involved community interviews, including one with Mike Thompson, Wylie ISD's new Communications Director. The responses from students were heartwarming and often humorous, showcasing their creativity and servant hearts.

With 98 enthusiastic third-grade participants, the program is already a success, leading Wylie East to consider expanding leadership opportunities for students. Read the full story and more in the latest issue of The Growl!
