Serge Gasore speaks to Wylie High School students about the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda, with a presentation displayed behind him in the school library.

Students in Mr. Dowell’s Honors Geography classes were honored to hear from Serge Gasore, a native Rwandan and survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Serge shared his powerful story of survival, healing, and purpose. After earning master’s degrees from Abilene Christian University, he founded Rwanda Children, a nonprofit that provides education, resources, and hope to vulnerable children in his home village of Ntarama.

Serge’s work has earned both national and international recognition, including being named ACU’s Young Alumnus of the Year in 2018 and receiving the "Protectors of Friendship" medal from Rwanda’s First Lady in 2019.

Mr. Dowell’s students are now working to raise funds for Rwanda Children to support school supplies, health care, and more.
