Jake Smart brings modern technology to a colorful Wylie senior tradition.

On a summer evening at Wylie High School, seniors knelt over pavement with paintbrushes, chalk and planned designs. Jake Smart brought one extra tool: an Oculus virtual reality headset.
Jake’s mother had seen a social media video showing how VR could help outline a design. Using a stencil app, Jake positioned a virtual image over the pavement, adjusted its size and darkness, then traced it in chalk before adding paint.
“We didn’t have to hand draw anything,” Jake said. “We did it all with the VR.”
West Texas sunshine provided the only real technical trouble, occasionally interfering with the headset’s sensors. The finished space, however, was personal. Jake chose the Texas Tech logo because the lifelong Red Raider fan hopes to attend the university after graduation. He also added James 4:8, his favorite Bible verse.
“God plays a pretty big part in my life,” Jake said. “I thought I would share a little bit of the gospel.”
His senior space points toward where Jake hopes to go and what he plans to carry with him.
