The Wylie baseball team dug deep and showed tremendous grit over the weekend as they fought back to win the Class 5A area championship in a hard-fought three game series against El Paso Del Valle. After dropping Game 1 on Friday 4-2, the Bulldogs swept Saturday’s two games with a 14-0 win in Game 2 followed by a series-clinching 5-4 win in Game 3.
Pitching was the name of the game on Saturday as the WHS pitching staff limited Del Valle to four total hits in the doubleheader.
In the Game 2 14-0 win, Brady Gay pitched a complete-game shutout, limiting the Conquistadors to two hits while striking out four. His offensive teammates helped him out with three runs in the first inning followed by five spots in both the sixth and seventh. Blaze Ruffin was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in while Colby Garrett was 2-for-5 with a double, triple and five RBI.
In the deciding Game 3, the pitching combination of Tye Briscoe and Garrett stifled the Del Valle batters to only two hits, and the Bulldogs pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to win 5-4. Dylan Regala, who ended the weekend 7-for-10 at the plate, was 3-for-4 with a double. Garrett added two more hits while Jake Bearden was 2-for-3.
The series win moves the Bulldogs (23-5-1) into Class 5A Region I Semifinals for the fifth season in a row. This year, WHS will meet the Grapevine Mustangs in a three-game series beginning with Game 1 on Thursday, May 15 at 7:00 pm. Game 2 will first pitch on Friday, May 16 at 1:00 pm, and Game 3 will follow if necessary. The entire series will be played at Graham High School.
