Congratulations to the Wylie tennis trio of Hope Willis, Kate Delgado and Steven Cowling who all qualified for the UIL Class 5A State Tennis Championships after successful showings at the Region I-5A Tournament May 7-8 in Lubbock.
Willis rolled to the regional championship in girls’ singles, dropping only two games over the span of her four matches. In the finals, she defeated Sara Shelhamer from Amarillo High 6-0, 6-2 to win the title.
Cowling and Delgado made it to state in mixed doubles after winning their first three matches and making it to the championship. Their semifinal win over Barrett Stroud and Halle Rose from Amarillo High was the highlight of the tournament, fighting back to win 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. They fell in the title match but qualified for state as the Region I runner-up.
The UIL State Tennis Championships are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, May 15-16 at the Northside Tennis Center in San Antonio.
