Wylie High School Band Expands as Enrollment and Opportunities Rise
As Wylie ISD continues to grow, so does the heartbeat of school spirit—our Wylie High School Band. With increasing student enrollment across the district, the band program is marching confidently toward a future filled with both energy and expansion.
This growth—and the district’s commitment to supporting it—was recently featured by KTAB News in a story highlighting the incredible momentum of the band and the planned facility improvements aimed at meeting that demand. 🎺🎶
“We ended this year with around 170 students in the band,” said Head Band Director Kyle McDonald, “and next year we’re projecting over 200.” While a milestone worth celebrating, the current rehearsal spaces simply can’t keep up. “We couldn’t fit everyone in one room during summer band,” McDonald shared. “We had to split into smaller groups, using side rooms and rotating in and out of the main hall. It was crowded, but we made it work.”
The upcoming expansion will nearly double the size of the current band hall and is designed to accommodate 250–300 students comfortably. The new facility will include marching fundamentals space, dedicated areas for winds and percussion, and the ability to rehearse all three concert bands simultaneously—a much-needed upgrade that reflects Wylie’s strong investment in the fine arts.
“Our band had an amazing year,” McDonald added. “We had three students make the All-State Band, sent over 50 students to UIL Solo and Ensemble, and will be starting a second jazz band next year. This expansion is coming at just the right time.”
Superintendent Joey Light echoed that sentiment in the KTAB interview. “It’s a great time to be a Wylie Bulldog,” he said. “We’re not just growing in numbers—we’re growing in opportunities. We want Wylie ISD to be the best district in Texas, and that means making sure our facilities grow along with our students.”
Viewers got a special behind-the-scenes look at Wylie’s talent in action, including Damien Cook and Landon Ammons, who demonstrated their skills on camera—proving that no matter how packed the room, the Bulldog Band never misses a beat.
The expansion is expected to break ground in the coming months and be completed within the next year, creating space for the future of Wylie’s marching, concert, and jazz ensembles.
🎶💜The future’s looking note-worthy
