As Wylie ISD students begin their countdown to summer break, construction crews across the district are ramping up for a busy season of progress. Thanks to the community’s support in passing the 2023 bond, Wylie ISD is expanding to meet the needs of a growing student population—and local news is taking notice.
This week, KTXS reporter Tori Garcia visited Wylie High School to see firsthand how bond projects are shaping the future of our schools. In her segment, Garcia interviewed Superintendent Joey Light, who outlined the scope of the bond-funded improvements.
“We’ve put in some turf, practice area for bands and athletic teams, we’ve got a new elementary that is under construction," said Light. "We’ll have a band hall, another gym that will also be a storm shelter, and then we’ll have dressing rooms and locker rooms for athletics.”
The construction at Wylie High School includes a new agriculture building, which is expected to be completed by November. This project is part of a larger plan to add over 60 new classrooms and expanded Career and Technical Education (CTE) spaces—providing students with better access to workforce-ready training in growing industries.
“As we continue to look in our area and see some of the new things that are coming to Abilene, like Lancium and Stargate, it’s helping our students prepare for those opportunities,” Light added.
Wylie High currently utilizes four portable buildings and anticipates adding a fifth next year to accommodate rising enrollment. The new additions will not only ease crowding but will help the district keep pace with projected growth—up to 2,500 students at the high school in the next seven years.
Additionally, a new K-5th grade elementary school is under construction on FM 707 west of Buffalo Gap Road and is expected to open by August 2026.
“We continue to grow between 3-5% each year,” Light explained. “This bond is about being prepared—for space, for safety, and for the future.”
We are grateful to Tori Garcia and the KTXS team for highlighting the exciting developments across Wylie ISD and helping share our story with the broader community.
