Celebrating Champions: Wylie ISD Honors Student Achievements at June School Board Meeting
At the most recent Wylie ISD School Board Meeting, applause and heartfelt recognition filled the room as the district proudly honored several exceptional students and staff for their incredible accomplishments this school year.
From gold medals to groundbreaking achievements, the night was a celebration of hard work, talent, and the spirit that makes Wylie special.
🎾 Hope Makes History with Tennis State Title
The meeting began with a ovation for Hope Willis, Wylie’s State Champion, who captured the 5A Girls Singles Tennis State Title. “She’s not just talented—she’s tireless,” said her coach, referencing a quote seen in a classroom: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” Hope, who just finished her sophomore year, is already serving up a legacy of excellence.
“She’ll be a junior next year, so keep your eye on her,” one board member added. “Watch out, world!”
🐾 Spelling Success: UIL Academic Champs Shine
Next, the spotlight turned to a powerhouse team of UIL Academic competitors who brought home the 5A State Championship in Spelling. Led by coach Holly Kirby, the team of Tehzeeb Grewal, Ava Ramos, Justice McGuiness, and Tessa Jones delivered a dominant performance.
Among them, Tehzeeb became the individual state spelling champion for the second year in a row, achieving the highest score in the entire state—across all classifications from 1A to 6A. “These kids didn’t just win—they became a little family,” said Coach Kirby. “Watching their friendships grow was just as powerful as the gold medals.”
The team’s score of 267 was the highest in Texas, a true testament to their preparation and teamwork.
📘 “Look Up”: Yearbook Staff Earns Praise and National Nomination
Before the night concluded, the board heard from Allison McCall, one of this year’s yearbook co-editors, who presented a copy of the 2024 edition titled “Look Up.” More than just a collection of photos, this year’s yearbook was a reflection of a connected, compassionate student body.
“This theme was different. It was about looking up to each other, to our future, and to the moments that matter,” Allison explained. The effort was met with overwhelming support: 970 copies were sold, a new high that reflects how deeply the book resonated with the Wylie community.
The yearbook has even been nominated for a national award by the publishing company—news that brought smiles and cheers from everyone in attendance.
Superintendent Joey Light closed the evening with words that captured the heart of the meeting:
“There’s no better investment than celebrating the achievements of our students. These moments matter.”
Congratulations to our champions, creators, and community leaders—thank you for embodying the very best of Wylie ISD.
