Morning bus route to Dyess and enrollment near record highs
Wylie ISD was recently featured on KTAB News, highlighting two important updates as the new school year begins: a new bus route serving Dyess Air Force Base and continued strong enrollment numbers across the district.
Superintendent Joey Light shared how new legislation opened the door for military families to choose Wylie schools. Last year, that meant new students coming from Dyess — but many families still faced challenges with transportation. This year, Wylie ISD stepped in to help. The district launched a new morning bus route to the base, and to set the tone, Light himself climbed behind the wheel for the very first trip.
“I hope everybody understands that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help,” Light said in the interview. “Whether it’s driving a bus, picking up trash, or directing traffic, we want to be sure everyone’s on board to serve our kids.”
The route currently serves about 10 students, but Wylie expects that number to grow as more Dyess families learn about the option. At the same time, district enrollment continues to “flirt with record highs,” a sign of Wylie’s strong reputation and steady growth.
With new construction underway, strong accountability ratings, and a community that continues to rally around its schools, Wylie ISD is keeping its focus where it matters most — making sure every student has the chance to succeed.
