Third graders step up to lead at Wylie East Elementary
The hallway outside the interview room looked a little like a mix of Shark Tank and American Idol. Dozens of third graders, dressed in their best “I’m ready to be responsible” faces, waited for their chance to prove they had what it takes to wear the Spike Squad vest.
So, what is Spike Squad? At Wylie East Elementary, members of the Spike Squad are student leaders who set the tone for the school. They help in the hallways, remind classmates of expectations, greet others with kindness, and model what responsibility looks like in action. It’s the first “job” many students ever hold — and one they take seriously.
The questions were simple: tell us about yourself, what makes you responsible, and why do you want to be in Spike Squad? But the answers — those were priceless.
One student confidently explained that practicing Jiu Jitsu was the perfect qualification because it taught discipline and self-control. Another proudly said, “I just follow directions,” before adding that being responsible also meant mopping the floor and washing the dishes at home.
Some applicants leaned on experience. “I’ve been here since kindergarten — I know where everything is,” one student said with a grin, promising to help new classmates find their way. Another talked about leading by example: “Those second graders and first graders look up to us now. We have to show them how it’s done.”
Others were inspired by the Spike Squad members who came before them. One third grader admitted, “Last year I saw them in their vests helping people listen. I thought, that’s what I want to do.” Another shared a moment of kindness: helping a new friend find a lost bracelet in the hall.
Between mentions of sports, favorite TV shows, messy bedrooms, and helpful chores, one theme kept coming through — these kids are ready to take responsibility seriously, even if they still say it with a smile.
Thanks to the community volunteers who stepped in to serve as interviewers, every student had the chance to shine. Their encouragement and thoughtful questions turned the process into more than just a selection — it became a lesson in leadership, kindness, and confidence.
By the end, one thing was clear: Spike Squad isn’t just about opening doors or giving reminders in the hallway. It’s about teaching our youngest leaders that responsibility matters, and that even in third grade, they can inspire others.
At Wylie East Elementary, the future looks bright — and maybe just a little louder, now that a brand-new Spike Squad is ready to take charge. Because here, it’s always great to be a Wylie Bulldog!
