Last week’s two-day community food drive—hosted across United Supermarkets and Market Street, Hardin-Simmons University, and right here at Wylie ISD—was a tremendous success. Together, our partner locations collected well over two and a quarter tons of food to support families across the Big Country.
These donations couldn’t have come at a better time. Many families in our area continue to face food insecurity, a challenge made even more difficult by the ongoing government shutdown. All donated items have now been delivered to the Food Bank of West Central Texas and are already on the shelves, ready to serve our neighbors.
“We are always amazed at how the community shows up during times of greatest need,” said Brandon Forrest, Chief Executive Officer of the Food Bank. “And yet we’re not at all surprised either! Resiliency and generosity are traits that have always embodied the people of Abilene and the surrounding West Central Texas area, and this time has been no different. We are so grateful for the way KTAB, KRBC, Telemundo, and Big Country Homepage viewers and readers responded to help feed their neighbors in need. Their giving allows the Food Bank to keep showing up for children, seniors, those with disabilities, and the most vulnerable in our communities.”
Wylie ISD is proud to play a small part in the effort—and even prouder of the families, students, and community members who stepped up with kindness and compassion. As Thanksgiving approaches, we are reminded once again of the strength, generosity, and heart that make Abilene such a special place to call home.
