A Legacy of Service, Growth, and Heart

Wylie Independent School District announced today the retirement of Superintendent Joey Light, a lifelong Bulldog whose steady leadership, servant heart, and deep love for students have helped shape the district for generations. Light’s anticipated final day is September 30, 2027, though the transition of leadership may take place prior to that date.

For more than three decades in Wylie ISD - and more than 40 years in education - Light has worn many hats: teacher, coach, principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent, mentor, bus driver, advocate, and friend. Since becoming superintendent in 2008, he has helped guide Wylie through remarkable growth while never losing sight of what matters most: people.

Under Light’s leadership, Wylie ISD has grown from a small but proud district into one of the most respected public school systems in the Big Country. During his tenure, district enrollment more than doubled, now serving more than 5,500 students. He helped lead Wylie’s transition from Class 4A to 5A, oversaw major campus expansions and facility improvements, and helped the district navigate successful community-supported bond initiatives that positioned Wylie for continued growth well into the future. Recent bond projects under his leadership include the construction of Wylie South Elementary, expanded high school facilities, and critical safety upgrades across the district.

Wylie ISD School Board President Miller Loudermilk said Light’s impact on the district reaches far beyond his title.

“Joey Light has been the kind of superintendent every school district hopes to have - steady, humble, deeply committed, and always focused on what is best for kids,” said Loudermilk. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside him not only as board president, but also as a friend, and that gives me a unique perspective on the heart he brings to this role every single day. His leadership helped Wylie grow without ever losing the close-knit culture that makes this district special. Joey has led by showing up - in classrooms, on buses, at events, and in the Capitol advocating for public education. His fingerprints are on every part of this district, and his legacy will be felt for years to come.”

Light, a Wylie graduate himself, said serving the district that helped shape his own life has been the honor of a lifetime.

“This place has always been home to me,” said Light. “Wylie ISD is more than a school district - it is a family. I’m proud of what we’ve built together and grateful for the people who make it so special. Wylie is in a strong place, and I have full confidence the best is still ahead.

By announcing this decision early, I hope to give the school board time to thoughtfully navigate this leadership transition. A special and heartfelt thank you to every family who placed their trust in me with the most precious people in their lives - their children. To the school board, staff, students, and families, your support has meant everything.”

His leadership has been defined by quiet consistency and an unwavering belief in the value of public education. As Wylie ISD looks ahead, the district does so on the strong foundation he helped build - one rooted in trust, care, and a commitment to excellence.

And because of that, it will always be great to be a Wylie Bulldog.
