Scholarship Surprise Sends Wylie Senior Toward Colorado School of Mines

1

Wylie High School senior Luke Schonerstedt has always had the look of a student headed somewhere. This week, that “somewhere” came with a very large check, a few proud smiles, and a future stretching all the way to Colorado.

Luke was surprised with a scholarship from the BCMA Big Country Manufacturing Alliance, presented by Shelly Long with Rentech, Manning Marsh with Workforce Solutions, Bill Dean with Workforce Solutions, and Anna Mitchell, Wylie ISD’s Career Youth Success Advisor.

The scholarship recognizes students in the region who have shown interest in engineering, manufacturing, or work-based learning opportunities. Luke, who plans to attend the Colorado School of Mines to study biomechanical engineering, was selected as this year’s recipient. During the presentation, representatives shared that the scholarship is open to students in the region who have toured a manufacturing plant or shown interest in engineering or manufacturing careers.

For Luke, the scholarship comes at just the right time. As he put it, going out of state to Colorado School of Mines is “just gonna be a lot,” and the support will help as he takes the next big step.

Those gathered encouraged Luke to stay in touch and share updates from his college journey, a reminder that this moment was about more than a check. It was about a community investing in a student’s future and cheering him on as he leaves Wylie prepared to build, solve, create, and lead.

And that is one more reason it’s great to be a Wylie Bulldog.
